Youth Mental Health First Aid
Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis.
Objectives:
- Understanding risk factors of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents
- Understanding warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents
- Learn ways to support a youth developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness
- Learn how to assist in a crisis situation
- Learn how to initiate conversations that encourage a youth to talk about a mental health or substance use issue
- Discuss professional and other supports that could help with recovery to improved mental well-being
- Learn the five-step action plan known as ALGEE:
- Assess for risk of suicide or harm
- Listen non-judgementally
- Give reassurance and information
- Encourage appropriate professional help
- Encourage self-help and other support strategies
- Check in with one’s own mental well-being and take action as needed
