Exploring the Paradoxes of Mourning: Enhancing Your Understanding of Three Forgotten Truths
This informative workshop was developed to build the knowledge and skills of nurses, counselors, social workers, hospice workers, clergy, chaplains, lay ministers, funeral directors and any health care professionals providing support and counsel to individuals experiencing traumatic grief. The concept of paradox in relationship to grief and mourning is essential to understand how mourners heal in the aftermath of significant loss. This program challenges conventional “stay strong” approaches to grief by encouraging the embrace of contradictory truths, such as needing to “say hello” to pain, befriending the darkness, and going backward through memories to move forward. Based on the “slow grief” and “companioning” models, the program assists individuals and caregivers in actively engaging with, rather than avoiding, the grief process.
