When Barriers Shape Birth & Beyond: Supporting Physiological Labor in an Inequitable System
This presentation explores how historical, structural, and social factors shape contemporary birth experiences within hospital systems. Through an examination of the evolution of birth in the United States, current maternal and infant health outcomes, and the role of physiological labor, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how care environments influence outcomes. Using de-identified, case-based reflection and interactive self-assessment, this session invites healthcare professionals to examine how communication, power dynamics, and institutional practices impact patient humanity, autonomy, safety, and dignity. Emphasis will be placed on collaborative, trauma-informed approaches that support physiologic birth while honoring the diverse needs of birthing families.
