Exploring in the Here and Now: An Antidote to Externalization
In this presentation we will address the unconscious defense mechanism of externalization in which people become overly focused on the external as a reason for their difficulties and fail to recognize their own power to help themselves. We will address how to spot externalizing in session and how to help the client to see it. We will learn how to help clients discover what it costs them to externalize and invite them to the present moment, to an internal focus that empowers them to free themselves from the pain they are in.
You will gain tools to express your deep caring for the client’s pain while helping them restructure their understanding of the source of it. You will learn how to invite the client into the here and now, and an internal focus that invites them to notice that focusing outside of themselves is self-ignoring and self-defeating. Clients will develop a deep and abiding understanding of their own internal workings and how they can access their own loving attention to self to heal past wounds and gain resilience going forward.
