Approaches to Effective Pain Management
Pain is a complex experience that affects both physical and emotional well-being, and understanding its many forms is essential for effective care. This workshop invites participants to take a reflective and practical deep dive into pain assessment and management, examining how different types of pain impact clients’ overall functioning. Participants will explore a variety of pain management approaches, including pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods, while critically examining the role of opioids in treatment. The session will address the opioid epidemic, its connection to over-prescription, and the risks of misuse, addiction, and overdose, highlighting the importance of ethical and responsible practice. Participants will also explore alternative strategies, such as mindfulness and cognitive-behavioral techniques, to reduce reliance on opioids. Finally, the workshop will consider effective methods for monitoring and evaluating pain in clients and the broader implications of the opioid crisis on health care and behavioral health systems.
